License Expired More Than 3 Years:
Pursuant to Tenn. Code Ann. § 62-4-117(d) for Cosmetologist and 62-3-129(c) for Master Barbers, licenses expired for more than three (3) years become invalid. In order to reinstate an invalid license, the licensee must take reinstatement exams. The only exception is if you have been licensed more than 20 years prior to the license expiring. If you have been licensed more than 20 years prior to the license expiring and you did not renew in the last three (3) years but has not been expired more than eight (8) years you will not need to test.
Individuals needing reinstatement of their license will need to complete the Application to Test. Processing takes 10-15 business days. Once processed, applicants that need to test will be preregistered for their exam and contacted by the Board with further instructions. If the applicant is exempt from testing the board will contact them with their next steps.
Reinstatement by Reciprocity:
An Expired license can be reinstated by applying for reciprocity if their license is Active in another jurisdiction.
This is only allowed twice. If the licensee allows the license to fully expire a second time, they will have to reapply using an Application to Test.
