How do I renew my contractor license and how long do I have?

Renewal notices are mailed 90 days prior to the license expiration date to the address listed on file. Please allow 30 days to process a renewal once received by our office. Licensees have the option to renew online in their account at https://core.tn.gov

Contractors will need to upload and attach their Financial Statement and Certificate of Insurance for General Liability and also Workers’ Compensation (or exemption registration unless claiming the handyman exemption)  to complete their online renewal.   Contractors with a monetary limit of $3 million or less may self-prepare their balance sheet and a template is available on our website at:  http://www.tn.gov/content/dam/tn/commerce/documents/regboards/contractors/forms/ContBLC-FSBalanceSheet.pdf   Home Improvement Contractors will need to upload and attach the Bond continuation and Certificate of Insurance for General Liability, and also for Workers’ Compensation (or their exemption registration unless claiming the handyman exemption).  Limited Licensed Electricians and Plumbers are not required to upload documents to their renewal.

If the license has the BC-A license classification CE is required. Please see CLICK HERE for information on requirements.

Licensees do not have a grace period to continue working whenever their license expires, however, they do keep renewal rights for up to three (3) months, with the exception of Contractors,  to renew with late fees before they are required to reinstate through the new application process.  Contractors have 12 months before losing renewal rights, however, cannot continue to perform work while the license is expired or it is considered unlicensed contracting.  Contractors also have the option to place their license in Retirement to keep renewal rights.  For more requirements and forms, please visit our Forms and Downloads website.
