How to Apply - Engineer

Step 1: Eligibility Requirements

I. Education

  • A four-year degree in engineering approved by the Board

II. Experience 

  • i.  Obtain four (4) years of engineering experience satisfactory to the Board Examinations, OR
  • ii. 3 years of post-graduate experience with a graduate engineering degree not earned concurrently, OR 
  • iii. 3 years of post-graduate experience with 3 semesters of co-op experience listed on the college transcript.

III. Examinations

  • i. Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (which is waived if the applicant has 12 or more years of engineering experience acceptable to the Board)
    • Applicants for the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam no longer apply to the Tennessee Board for authorization to sit for the exam. Applicants may apply directly with NCEES at http://ncees.org/
  • ii. Pass the Principles of  Engineering Exam (PE)
    • To pre-register for the exam, applicants must complete the "Application to Test," in CORE.

Note: If an applicant has a National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) record, the references, transcript(s), and verification(s) in the record will be accepted and do not need to be submitted separately. Provided they meet the requirements of Rule 0120-01-.09 and are less than two years old.

  • Five (5) references from persons acquainted with your technical ability and character. 
    • Three (3) references must be from registered engineers, and 
    • References are required from both a current employer or technical supervisor and a past employer or technical supervisor (if applicable). 
    • No more than three (3) references can be from one place of employment. 
    • References from relatives are not acceptable.

III. Fee, $140
